The Sphynx originated in Canada in 1966 from a natural genetic mutation that causes hairlessness. Despite their lack of fur, they are not completely bald - they may have a fine peach-fuzz coating on their skin. Their warm, soft skin and wrinkled appearance make them one of the most unique and beloved breeds.
Where It All Began
A hairless kitten named Prune was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1966. She was bred with a Devon Rex, and the hairless trait continued in her offspring. Through careful breeding, the Sphynx breed was developed and recognized by TICA (The International Cat Association) in 2002.
